A Much-Needed Girls Day and Happy New Year!

Happy 2014 everyone!

Ours started off with a bang. We spent New Year's Eve with our friends Brittany, Brian, Maggie and Tom. We ordered pizza, played Catch Phrase (I lost it for the girls when I failed to give good clues for Joss Stone) and danced in our apartment. Chinese president Xi Jinping even graced us with a televised address shortly after midnight. Maggie got an awesome photo of it and has a great caption:

Maggie: "Xi clearly in need of some holiday champagne."

A few days before the New Year, Brittany and I had a fabulous girls day. (Brittany works at the Wall Street Journal and moved from Hong Kong in August. She absolutely rocks.) I went to see her new apartment, which is in this adorable hutong -- a traditional Chinese neighborhood -- and we ate incredible Yunnan food, a southwestern type of Chinese cuisine, and then got manicures and pedicures.

The mani-pedi shop in the hutong was freezing -- there isn't great heating in hutongs in general -- so we decided to grab a few beers from the store next door to warm us up. There were two cats roaming around the nail shop, one of which was so big it looked like a lynx or something. Here's a photo:

Or maybe it was a small tiger.

Our nails took forever -- not in a bad way, just in a "this was the most meticulous mani-pedi I've ever had" type of way. The guy who did mine must have spent at least 20 minutes alone on my cuticles. It was a nice change of pace from New York's nail shops, where you're in and out in that much time and don't really get to relax. We both decided to go for some sparkles on our toes. Because, as Brittany put it, "You're never too old for sparkles." Yes.

Brittany getting pampered.

Hope your New Year is off to a good start!
